RAM assigns Gold Sustainability Rating to Cenviro Sdn Bhd

RAM has assigned a Gold Sustainability Rating to Cenviro Sdn Bhd (Cenviro or the Group), an integrated waste management company wholly-owned by Khazanah Nasional Berhad. 

The Group has excelled in all sustainability components assessed by RAM, namely Environment, Social, Governance and Positive Impact, which have also been rated Gold respectively. Gold represents the highest rating in RAM’s three-tiered Sustainability Rating Framework.

Cenviro’s outstanding sustainability performance is driven by the Group’s strong governance in sustainability. The Group has embedded sound sustainability principles within its overarching organisational vision, strategy, operations and its various sustainability initiatives. 

RAM also recognises Cenviro as a waste management leader that brings positive environmental benefits through the provision of integrated environmental solutions with a primary focus on sustainable waste management through innovation. Since its establishment, the Group’s waste management activities have been highly focused on handling and disposing scheduled and municipal wastes. Cenviro demonstrates a positive change in the Malaysian waste management industry by adopting innovative waste minimisation and recovery practices within its operations.

“Cenviro is fulfilling an important role in Malaysia’s sustainable consumption and production strategy through its innovative waste management practices and expansion into the generation of renewable energy,” says Gladys Chua, Head of Sustainability Services.

The Group has introduced strong environmental control measures by aligning policies towards widely recognised ISO standards and establishing an environmental management programme. The Group also operates in a highly regulated industry supervised by the Department of Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment Malaysia, which regulates all scheduled waste and e-waste management service providers. 

Cenviro’s strong social performance is demonstrated by its sustained focus concerning training and development and occupational health and safety. RAM believes these aspects are important as waste management activities have a high health-and-safety risk exposure and often require specialised knowledge and skillsets. As part Cenviro’s continuous endeavour in developing urban communities, the Group actively invests in educating the public on the importance of recycling.

That said, Cenviro can continue to improve the quality of sustainability disclosures by collecting and disclosing performance data for the joint-venture and associate companies. Further, Cenviro can also establish specific and measurable targets, which can help identify improvement areas and shape the framework of the environmental action plans.
